Immune-boosting Routine – 6 Steps to prevent catching a cold

The weather is yo-yo-ing a bit these days, going from winter to spring to winter again! With some colder days coming up, letting your guard down a bit can make you vulnerable to the common cold or flu. Although there are many supplements and vitamin pills that are advertised to boost your immune system, you end up peeing most of it out of your system. At Dr Gaye, we say natural is best and there are immune-boosting steps that you can take without the help of pills. Drinking our Super-Shake every morning or Super-Golden in the afternoon can help prevent inflammation and boost your immune system but there are extra steps you can take to kick your defence up a notch. When it’s seasonal cold and allergy season, follow these tips that will keep you healthy and cold-free – the natural way!

How to boost your immune system – 6 steps:

  1. Drink plenty of water. We need to stay hydrated because we need water for every function of the body. We also need the lining of the nose to stay moist so it traps bacteria and viruses before they enter our lungs.
  2. Eat raw garlic. Or just rub some on the soles of your feet and put socks on for bed. If you chop garlic into honey, the taste and smell are reduced. If you don’t eat honey, you can always take garlic capsules if you can’t stomach raw garlic by the teaspoon!
  3. Drink hot ginger and lemon teas. Slice or juice some ginger into a teapot and add freshly squeezed lemon juice at the end (to not kill the vitamin C).
  4. Up your vitamin D intake. There are two types of Vitamin D: one is sunshine, so make sure you get outside every day; the second type is edible and although supplements are okay you might want a food source. You can get D in eggs or if you’re vegan, try portabello or maitake mushrooms.
  5. Wash your hands frequently and keep them away from your eyes, nose and mouth.
  6. Get ample sleep. We all need sleep to rest the mind, body and soul and help the system regenerate for the next day. Even a 20-minute afternoon ‘disco-nap’ can help reduce stress and rejuvenate the system.

If it’s too late and you’ve already caught a cold or flu, the steps above can help speed up your recovery. In addition to these tips, try an inhalation of sage and/or comfrey. Sage has natural antibacterial properties and has a history of being used as an antiseptic. Simply boil some sage (dried or fresh) in a pot of water for a few minutes, remove it from the stove, sit with your head over the pot, cover your head with a towel and breathe deeply!
